Tea Stains Be Gone!

It’s been said that in times of crisis, we reveal our true selves. Six months into coronavirus lockdown, I’ve learned that — among other things —I really do prefer tea over coffee.

With the rush of “normal life” behind us, and the jarring reminder that every day truly is a blessing, this is the time to celebrate small moments. My morning cup of English Breakfast tea, punctuated with just a little milk and sugar, has truly become one of the most joyful parts of my day. (Matched only by my second cup a few hours later).

Holed up in an apartment with two preteen boys and a husband working from home means that I have little time to myself. As much as I adore my family, those quiet minutes in the early morning has become something I cherish. Sipping my piping hot tea before the chaos of Zoom school begins gives me the peace of mind to face a new day, and, more often, to just be.

The only inconvenient side effect of my blossoming tea habit is the dark brown stains that line my once pristine mugs. Even though I know the dishes are technically clean, the kids complain that the cups look “dirty.” But no matter how hard I scrub or however many times I put them through my circa 1980s dishwasher, the stains only get darker by the day.

The answer to this dilemma was surprisingly simple, and a throwback to my grandmother’s kitchen. As with most household problems, I found that baking soda is the answer. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with just enough cold water to make a thick paste, and with a non-scratch sponge, scrub those stains away!

The peace and quiet of my morning tea definitely tastes sweeter in a clean cup.
