How to Peel Ginger

We love tangy, fragrant ginger as a flavorful addition to tea, fried rice, soups, salad dressings and sweet treats. Some people are put off by fresh ginger root’s lumpy appearance, but this soft underground plant is actually pretty delicate and easy to handle. You can use your hands to break off small pieces, and the skin is paper thin. It’s actually pretty easy to peel ginger with a plain metal spoon, no fancy equipment required. We like this little hack for a few reasons:

  1. The bumpy skin of ginger can mean sudden snags — a spoon is safe for kids (and clumsy grown-ups!)
  2. Why dirty extra cutlery? Washing peelers isn’t fun.
  3. Holding the spoon gives you better control as you peel.

In the kitchen as in life, simpler is usually better. Enjoy your freshly peeled ginger!
